Over 41,500 Games of Pool played at the 5 Sullivan Brothers Convention Center!

The city of Waterloo, Iowa once again played host to the 10th Annual Iowa State Pool Players Association (ISPA) 8-Ball and 9-Ball singles and team State Championships. This is the eighth consecutive year this event has been held in Waterloo at the 5 Sullivan Brothers Convention Center adjacent to the downtown Ramada Inn, where 120 Valley pool tables were set up for the five day event. Tables were provided by High Country Promotions out of Fort Collins, Colorado.  The tournament overall saw an increase this year of approximately 5% in total participants.  The eighth straight year of growth! Play began on Wednesday, March 30th at 6PM and continued until the late evening of April 3rd.

The ISPA hosted sanctioned league players from throughout the state; in particular from the cities of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Creston, Cresco, Manchester, Dubuque, Clinton, Cedar Rapids/Marion, Iowa City, Charles City, Hudson, Muscatine, Maquoketa, Des Moines, Osceola, Burlington, Garner/Mason City, Ames, Quad Cities, Council Bluffs/Omaha, Waverly, Dyersville, Fort Dodge and Solon.  These cities combined to make this the largest single state association event in the entire World. There were over 1400 singles entries and 286 teams.  Over 1600 total participants.  Total entries for all 11 events exceeded 1700!

This year the ISPA offered the following championships in the following 11 divisions;

The total cash and prizes for this event exceeded $100,000, all generated from entry fees and $25,000 added by the ISPA. For the 3rd year, the tournament offered a 2nd Chance open team tournament held on Sunday.  29 men & women’s teams took advantage to play in this 12th event which paid out in cash only.

The special guest present for this year’s event was the World’s Master Trick Shot Champion, Mike Massey.  Mike’s exhibitions on Thursday, Friday & Saturday played to standing room only full houses in the special arena setup in the Convention Center lobby.

Major sponsors from the Waterloo area included Fahr Beverage (local Budweiser distributor), the Waterloo Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Ramada Inn and Convention Center, with additional support provided by the City of Waterloo Leisure Services, Quality Inn & Suites, the Crossroad’s Heartland Inn, Grand Hotel, Don’s Maximum Sight & Sound,  & the John Deere Community Credit Union. Invaluable assistance was also provided by Roberts Vending and Fischels Music.  The generosity and support of all these Waterloo businesses help to make this huge event all possible and we are certainly indebted to them and wish to thank them for that.  A special thanks goes to Fahr Beverage for providing all of event signage, jackets and plaques.

 Major billiard industry sponsors were High Country Promotions, Tweeten Fibre Company, Jacoby Cues and Midwest Supply. All contributed to the event success by generously donating top quality products in support of the ISPA and the many players it represents throughout the state.

 On Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning product vendors arrived from as far away as Michigan selling up an impressive array of billiard products and services.  These product vendors included Frank’s Center, Inc. from Nevada, Missouri, Guido Orlandi Custom Cue Repair from Channing, Michigan, the Sportscenter clothing from Waterloo, Diveney Cues from West Liberty, Chair Massage by Whitney and Action Photography from Manchester, Iowa.

 Each year this tournament is open to any and all players who are members of the ISPA through their membership in a sanctioned ISPA member league. The ISPA at over 3400 members statewide and due to the terrific response to this event and all the countless hours invested by the many volunteer members of the ISPA, next year promises to be even bigger and better. If you or your league has interest in sanctioning & participating, please contact the Iowa State Pool Players Association at (319) 235-9550, on-line at www.iowapool.org or write us at ISBPA, 1206 29th Avenue, Silvis, Illinois 61282.

 As are all ISPA events, the admission is always free of charge and open to anyone who may wish to come and watch some of the best 8-Ball and 9-Ball in the country played right here in eastern Iowa. Next year’s event is tentatively scheduled to be held once again at Ramada Inn and Convention Center from March 22nd – 26th, 2006. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!
